So just what do sailors do for sh*ts and giggles on days when all charters are cancelled due to “high winds and rough seas”?… Well, we go out in it of course…
And that’s exactly what we did last week, a few of the boys from Bonnie Lass Charters swung by Rose Rambler on their high powered sport fishing boat “Catchalote” and said, “Hey Marky, we’re heading out to get the boat wet, wanna come?”
Naturally any chance for a bit of an adrenaline rush, I’m there like a bear so I hopped right on.
So the four of us, two of which are some of the most experienced skippers you’ll ever have the pleasure of going to sea with, headed out into the high winds and swells to give her some beans…. And boy did we…
As we smashed through gunning it upwind through the swells, causing huge amounts of spray, the four of us sitting way up on the upper deck in flybridge were completely and utterly soaked to the bone.
Whereat times, I couldn’t see a thing in front of me. However halfway through, that’s when we realised the schoolboy error we’d made… in our rush to leave, none of us thought to bring a Go Pro to document the awesome experience.
On returning we realised one of the turbo intakes had developed a problem, however, that wasn’t going to keep the good times rolling, so we moored up Catchalote, got the Go Pros sorted and hopped onto their flagship boat, the famed “Bonnie Lass”, a 70-year-old, 32ton wooden fishing boat, and went out again.
Although it naturally wasn’t as wild a ride as Catchalote, Bonnie Lass provided her own form of excitement in a way that only she can… let’s just say, when you plough 32 tons of beastly brute force through swells, it certainly is something very few apart from fishermen and mariners may ever experience.
Naturally, I perched myself right up in the fun seat, in the basket on the mast… I think the look on my face says it all… Good times!
😎🙌🏻⛵️
P.S. don’t be deceived on how flat the sea may look, cameras never capture swell height well at all…
