Just days after Sailing Yacht Rose Rambler was washed onto the beach in Port Soller, Mallorca, we had her lifted out the water to check if she sustained any further damage, this is what we found.
Two days after the accident, Chris from Mezzo Magic Sailing Charters (thanks again for the help my bru) and I managed to get Rose Rambler lifted out of the water in the small shipyard in Port Soller, Mallorca, to inspect her hull and do a thorough check for any damage.
Given that you don’t want to be 100miles offshore only to realise you have a crack in the hull that you didn’t realise was there. 😬

To our absolute amazement, apart from a few tiny skin deep chips under the keel and a lot of paint scraped away, she was fine and dandy.
Which is pretty damn remarkable, to say the least, all I can say is she is one tough old girl that’s for sure.
In the old days they sure build boats strong, because after managing to get her away from the rocks, with the incredible force that she hit the beach with, in that moment I thought the entire keel was going to come through the floor, it was a sickening thud, something I still remember incredibly vividly and feel it every time I do.
The great thing is Rosey is built with an encapsulated keel and a skeg rudder which means she’s incredibly strong.
Newer boats these days have bolt-on fin keels and rudders which are great for speed and manoeuvrability, but one thing is for sure, if I was in a newer boat at the time, the keel and the rudder would have snapped right off like a twig.

We took the opportunity to give her underbelly a good scrape to get all the growth off while we were at it so she was nice and smooth to glide through the water better.
It was an incredible relief that nothing major was wrong with the hull or on the outside, the problem however as I would find out later out at sea was what damaged inside the boat…but I’ll tell you all about that as we continue the story…

Massive thanks again to Chris from Mezzo Magic Sailing Port Soller Charters for giving me a hand that day. Please do check them out if you want, they are an absolute awesome bunch and a great company to go with on boat trips in Mallorca.
